Underground gas storage – Banatski Dvor: Replacement of Control System (SMAR PLCs) with Siemens PLCs

CHALLENGES / PROBLEMS

  • Siemens does not support Foundation Fieldbus.
  • Adaptation of the control methodology from SMAR PLCs to Siemens PLCs to maintain system functionality.
  • Modification of the SCADA application, carried out in collaboration with ACE, a company responsible for SCADA application maintenance.

SOLUTION

  • At each of the 20 locations, the existing SMAR PLCs were replaced with Siemens S7-1500 series PLCs.
  • Foundation Fieldbus support was implemented using Softing FG-200 devices.
  • The entire control logic, interlocks, error handling, and related functions were implemented on Siemens PLCs. To simplify the transition for the SCADA application, variable names were retained in their original form.
  • Commissioning was performed sequentially, beginning with drilling borehole RB14 as an example. Subsequently, the entire process related to gas injection, withdrawal, and dehydration was completed. After the process part, the remaining 17 wells were drilled.

BENEFITS

  • Replacing obsolete SMAR PLCs with current Siemens S7-1500 series PLCs.
  • Simplified spare parts availability and maintenance support for a Siemens-based system compared to SMAR PLCs.
